Q: What is The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society?
A: The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society is a separate non-profit organization that supports the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. As such, its mission is to: promote the welfare of the Museum, stimulate public interest and participation in Museum activities, increase the Museum’s general membership, and maintain a close acquaintance with the activities of the Museum. The Society hosts several large fundraising events each year in pursuit of its mission.

Q: How did The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society begin?

A: Mrs. Margaret Acheson Stuart, the Museum's founder, along with Rexford Stead, the first Director, and Horace Jayne, Advisory Curator, set the goals of the original Women’s Committee. There is no record of how many women first met on November 29, 1962. At this meeting, The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society was chosen for the organization's name, bylaws were adopted, and officers were elected. Due to construction delays, the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg did not open until early 1965. 

Q: How can I join The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society?
A: Potential members of The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society must be sponsored by two members in good standing.  Additionally, potential members must be members of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg prior to submitting an application for membership in The Stuart Society.

Q: What are some of the events The Stuart Society presents?

A: Each year, we host a variety of events to raise funds such as: Smartly Dressed, Art in Bloom, Wine Weekend, and Affaires d'Art, a series of small events offered throughout the year including lectures, dinners and parties.

Q: What does the Museum of Fine Arts do with the funds raised?

A: Over $5 million has been raised since the inception of The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society in 1962. Funds donated have supported major exhibitions, art acquisitions, art restorations, educational programs, capital improvements,  and operating expenses.
